By Loreth Beswetherick For the last 12 weeks a four-person crew has been hard at work sprucing up the forest service recreation sites in the Lillooet Lake area and thanks is due, in part, to the Resort Municipality of Whistler. The Ministry of Forests, the Mount Currie band, BC Hydro and the RMOW are co-operating in the project that will see upgrades at the Twin One, Owl Creek, Strawberry Point, Driftwood Bay, Lizzie Bay and Lizzie Lake recreation sites wrapped up by Sept. 1. Picnic tables and outhouses are being installed and painted, the sites are being cleaned and visibility at site entrances is being improved. The upgrades are a first step in developing a co-operative management plan between Mount Currie and the Ministry of Forests for the campsites. BC Hydro provided funding to assist with wages to hire the Mount Currie crew. Creekside Resources in Mount Currie is also providing funding for the wages and is supervising the project. Whistler helped by writing the funding application, doing paperwork and supplying tools. Heather Beresford, the municipality's environment supervisor, said the RMOW has been looking for opportunities to work with Mount Currie. Although the recreation sites are well outside of the Whistler Land Resource Use Plan area, Beresford said that in the last six months to a year Whistler has realized it needs to be part of the bigger Sea to Sky corridor picture and work more with corridor communities. "Looking at the area as a whole, it is another amenity that adds to the whole recreation experience," said Beresford. "They are Ministry of Forest sites but of course they are in Mount Currie traditional territory, so, the way they are working around this without coming to logger heads is to do a co-management agreement."
