Decertification move continues While the provincial Labour Relations Board muddles through a ruling on whether or not to count a union decertification vote at the Listel Whistler Hotel, members of the Canadian Auto Workers at the Sea to Sky Chevron station in Squamish opted out of the union earlier this week. The CAW represents front desk and housekeeping staff at the Listel and a decertification vote was held Jan. 3. The Labour Relations Board sealed the ballot box after 47 of 52 Listel employees cast ballots. Silvia Simpson, a spokesperson for the CAW says they filed complaints regarding unfair labour practices at the Listel prior to the authorization of a decertification vote Dec. 22. Simpson says the decertification process was initiated after management hired a number of new employees in the dining room. Brian Ennis, general manger of the Listel, says the accusations are unfounded. He says the hotel did add about 10 new staff to take up the Christmas rush, but the decertification move came from long-term employees "The move to decertify had nothing to do with our restaurant people," he says. "The solid foundation for the decertification came from the front desk and housekeeping." Both say they are waiting for a ruling to come from Brent Mullen, vice chair of the Labour Relations Board, before they can comment any further.
