Local cyclist to compete in international multi-stage road race

Despite the fact that this is his first year ever on a road bike – and despite the fact that he has only entered one road competition – Whistler’s Tyler West has been selected to race for the B.C. Team at the upcoming Tour de l’Abitibi in Quebec.

It’s not that surprising when you consider that West won the only race he entered – the Norm Lowe Memorial B.C. Cup in Hatzic Valley on June 10 – finishing first among the category four juniors and among the top category three adults. He has also posted some impressive results mountain biking, although this is only his third year on bumpy tires.

The seven-day, eight stage Tour de l’Abitibi, starting July 16 and ending July 22, covers 600 kilometres of backroads and highways in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec.

With competitors and teams entered from around the globe, the Tour de l’Abitibi is considered to be one of the most prestigious junior road races in the world and a stepping stone to the pro circuit.
