Local free-heelers on top in nationals

A group of Whistler free-heelers found themselves on the podium at the Canadian Telemark Championships at Kimberley Alpine Resort. The event attracted more than 47 giant slalom racers on Saturday, March 15, and 58 classic racers on Sunday.

A group of Whistler free-heelers found themselves on the podium at the Canadian Telemark Championships at Kimberley Alpine Resort. The event attracted more than 47 giant slalom racers on Saturday, March 15, and 58 classic racers on Sunday.

In the overall combined results, which includes results from both the GS and classic races, Whistler’s Fabio Moscattelli took the bronze medal behind reigning champion Monte Paynter of Kimberley, and J.F. Lanoue of Quebec. Moscattellli finished just 0.05 seconds out of the silver medal spot.

Moscattelli missed the podium in the GS, but finished a close second in the classic race to make the combined podium.

In the women’s combined, Whistler’s Angela Schonicker took the silver medal, between winner Larissa Pitton of Edmonton and bronze medallist Fabienne Herve of Quebec.

Schonicker was second in the women’s GS behind Herve, and won gold in the classic race by a wide margin.

The next race is the Telemark World Cup and U.S. Nationals at Crystal Mountain in Washington this weekend., followed by the FIS World Telemark Championships at Big Mountain, Montana the next week.
