It was a small team this year, with the majority of athletes choosing to stay in Whistler for the annual Father-Daughter Dance.
Alex Arcalean, a Level 1 Tyro, won bronze medals for her routines on the floor and bars, and finished fourth on the beam.
Rebecca Flynn, a Level 1 Argo, finished gold on the bars, earned a bronze on the floor, and finished fourth on the beam. A knee injury kept her out of the vault competition.
"This was Rebecca’s first time in a provincial level competition, and she was amazing. Both of our gymnasts did really well, which is great for them. Both have had injuries recently, and have shown amazing dedication to their training," said Tami Ross, a coach with the Whistler Gymnastics Club.
"It’s always good for our athletes to walk into these events and see that they can actually compete against the girls with full-time facilities and more coaching. It’s good for their confidence, and the confidence of everyone in the club."
Several of Whistler Gymnastics’ LEAP athletes also went to White Rock to take part in the physical ability testing on Saturday and the skill testing on Sunday.
They were Kate Benjamin, Jazmine Budge, Lenka Prochazka, Maye Akame, Megan Moody, Julia Vodarek, Victoria Jazic, Avery Willis, Alexandra Shuker, and Sydney Jackson.
The Whistler Gymnastics Club is now accepting pre-registration for the 2004 fall session to guarantee spots in different programs. In addition, registration is underway for the club’s annual summer camp programs, for kids aged six and up at all skill levels. The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday from July 5 to 9 and Aug. 16 to 20. Call Catou at 604-902-FLIP (3547) to register.
There will also be an opportunity to sign up for both the summer and fall programs at the club’s annual year-end show. This year the theme is Beach Party, and it takes place on May 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Whistler Secondary School.
Whistler Gymnastics would also like to thank the Resort Municipality of Whistler for a Grant-In-Aid of $5,000 which will go towards new equipment for boys and girls enrolled in the program.
