Local players squash competition

The Whistler Squash Club held its annual tournament this past weekend at Meadow Park Sports Centre with more than 65 players taking part in various categories.

Three of the top-10 players in B.C. took part, including Whistler’s Ben Thomas who is currently ranked seventh.

Three Whistler players won their categories. Suzanne Wilson won the Women’s C category, Lorna Carmichael won the Women’s D tournament, and Bill MacGillvray finished on top of Men’s D.

Wendy Goodridge was third in Women’s B, Cheryl Morningstar was third in Women’s C, Richard Drennan was third in Men’s D, and Lloyd Adams was fourth in Men’s D. Other local players in the tournament were Rob Eberhard, Jeff Kraemer, Brad Rustad, Scott Carrel and Neil Mawdsley.

The Whistler Squash Club would like to thank all of their sponsors for their donations, as well as volunteers Annick Harris and Polly French.

This was the first year that the tournament was held on the long weekend, allowing for more matches without early morning starts. "With only two courts you can only hold so many games in a day, so on a regular weekend we were starting at 8 a.m. and finishing at midnight," said Thomas, who organized the tournament with the Whistler Squash Club. "This year with an extra day we were able to spread things out a little more. And because it was a long weekend there was a lot going on, so the people who took part had a good time.

"In fact we managed to dispel the notion that squash players are geeks by closing Garf’s on Friday, Moe Joe’s on Saturday and Bill’s on Sunday."

Thomas and Eberhard were the only two Whistler players in the Men’s Open category, the highest level of competition that weekend. The number four and number six player in the province played in the finals, while Thomas edged out Eberhard in the consolation final to finish third.
