Local volleyballers come close

For years, Jas Michalski and Tim Bonnell have been a powerhouse combination on the summer volleyball circuit, and this season was no exception.

For years, Jas Michalski and Tim Bonnell have been a powerhouse combination on the summer volleyball circuit, and this season was no exception.

The pair took part in the 2002 Beach Volleyball Provincial Championships at Vancouver’s Spanish Banks on Aug. 17, where they faced the top teams in the province.

They had a rough start to the day, heading into the round robin seeded 15 th , and drawing a difficult morning pool.

In typical fashion, they started the day slowly, but quickly gained momentum with the help of some key defensive saves from Bonnell and some big blocks from Michalski. By the time the morning session wrapped up, they were in the playoff round.

Despite struggling with serving and having trouble with shot consistency – the court dimensions for beach volleyball were reduced this year – they advanced to the quarter-finals. They played well, with Michalski driving some big kills into the sand and Bonnell making some big blocks, but the inconsistency cost them. They ended the day in fifth place in the province.

The duo has already put that match behind them, and have turned their attention to the grass at Myrtle Philip Community Centre.

This weekend the B.C. Provincial Grass Championships are taking place on the soccer fields, with mixed doubles on Saturday and men’s and women’s doubles on Sunday. Spectators are invited to come out and watch some of the top players in the province in action.

Bonnell and Michalski are sponsored by Black’s Pub, Sportstop, and the Wildwood Lodge.
