Locals on top at Enquist Slalom

Whistler K2s (ages 13 and 14) and J1s (15 and 16), all but swept the podium at the annual Enquist Slalom races Feb. 15 and 16, showing once again the depth of talent in the Whistler Mountain Ski Club.

The races were held on Whistler Mountain this year.

In the women’s slalom, J1 Danielle Robson took the top spot with a time of 1:21.45 over two runs. Kimberly Startup from the Vancouver Ski Team at Seymour was second among the J1s in 1:23.08, and Kerri Van-Doorninck of the Vancouver Ski Team at Cypress was third in 1:27.36.

Jennifer Mah and Nadia Samer of the WMSC finished second and third overall and first and second among the K2s with times of 1:22.76 and 1:22.81 respectively. Teammate Katherine Cape was third among K2s and fifth overall in 1:25.54.

In the first men’s slalom, WMSC K2 Matthew Holler blew away the competition with a time of 1:10:89 – 2.4 seconds faster than teammate James McLean. Thomas Kasperkiewicz, also of the WMSC, was third with a 1:15.65, followed closely by Whistler’s Conrad Pridy in 1:15.70.

In the second women’s slalom on Feb. 16, J1 Alison Leighton of Whistler was the top skier, posting a combined time of 1:20.95. She was followed by her teammate Danielle Robson in 1:21.85. The J1 bronze went to Katherine Clark from the Vancouver Ski Team at Grouse, who finished fifth overall in 1:26.53.

Georgia Simmerling of the Grouse Mountain Tyees was the top K2, finishing third overall with a time of 1:25.72. For Whistler, Jennifer Mah was second and Katherine Cape third in 1:26.02 and 1:29.56 respectively.

Matthew Holler was once again the top racer on the second day, leading both the K2 and J1 fields with a time of 1:18.42.

He was followed by three J1 racers, Whistler’s Jerry McArthur and Julian Simmerling and Jeff Hutton of the Vancouver Ski Team at Grouse, with times of 1:19.42, 1:20.40 and 1:21.45 respectively.

James McLean and Conrad Pridy were second and third among the K2s, finishing sixth and seventh with times of 1:23.59 and 1:24.88.
