Locals on top at Hammerfest

The weather could have probably been better, but nevertheless the turnout was huge for the annual Hammerfest bike races in Parksville last weekend, the first B.C. Cup event on the calendar for 2002. The downhill event alone had more than 300 entries.

A number of Whistler locals made the trip over to the island to take part, with mixed results.

In the cross country event, Tony Routley and Eric Crowe finished first and second in the Master 40-plus Expert event with times of 2 hours 4 minutes 36 seconds and 2:11:46.

Eric’s son James Crowe, who moved up to the Under 17 Expert Men’s category this year, was second overall by just two minutes with a time of 1:25:44. Local Jerry McArthur was 12 th in the same category with a time of 1:43:37.

In the Under 17 Expert Women’s race, Whistler’s Brook Baker finished second with a time of 2:03:37, more than 18 minutes back of the lead.

Among the Senior Elite Men, Michael Boehm was 12 th in 2:42:40, and Dave Burch 18 th in 2:47:17. Will Routley and Chad Miles were DNF’s.

In the downhill event, Whistler’s Jeff Beatty, the reigning national junior champion, finished in second place in the Junior Expert Downhill by a fraction over two seconds with a time of 3:38.85.

Marcus Waring was second in the Junior Sport race with a time of 3:54.07.

The B.C. Cup season continues from May 18 to 20 with cross country, downhill and dual slalom events at Action Question in Summerland, B.C.
