Locals on top at Race the Ranch

Race the Ranch, the first B.C. Cup downhill mountain bike race of the season took place on April 25 in Kamloops with a huge turnout of more than 350 riders in the field.

The race is short in length but still one of the more challenging on the circuit with loose dirt and dust from top to bottom as well as steep fall-line sections, rock gardens and a few features that it's safer to air over than to ride.

From Whistler, Jack Iles won the Under 15 category in two minutes and 13.67 seconds, almost 12 seconds faster than the next racer in his group.

Brett Pengelley, an Australian rider living in Whistler, placed first in Senior Men 19 to 29 in 1:57.17. Jesse Ballhausen of Pemberton was fifth in the category in 2:03.71, while Florent Carreyron - a French rider living in Whistler - placed 12 th out of 54 riders in 2:05.60.

Squamish rider Jordan Gosteli placed first in Under 17 Men in 2:01.07, with Kip Shortreed fifth in 2:05.79, Owen Scully seventh in 2:06.56 and Lee Jackson 10 th in 2:08.20. Whistler's Alexander Geddes was 16 th in Under 17 Men in 2:12.29. Jonny Dempsey of Squamish was 38 th .

Graham Beatty of Garibaldi Highlands was second in Master 40 to 49 Men in 2:10.63.

Cory Leclerc of Squamish was first in Master 30 to 39 men in 2:00.60, over two and a half seconds ahead of his closest competitor. Yanik Gaudet of Squamish was 12 th in 2:13.10, Bruce Pomeroy 14 th in 2:13.55 and Clark Lewis 15 th in 2:14.34. James Splinter of Pemberton was 21 st in 2:18.93.

In Junior Men 17 to 18 Max Horner was the top local, 10 th in 2:04.58.

Trevor Burke of Whistler was 16 th in Elite Men in 2:00.65.

Whistler's Dawn Cashen was third in Elite Women in 2:24.88, Pemberton's Jaime Hill was seventh in 2:33.27 and Squamish's Kristen Courtney eighth in 2:41.31.

Ryan Bompas-Brown of Brackendale placed 26 th in Under 19 Citizen Men in 2:38.46.

Gaurier Sordel of Whistler was eighth in 19 to 29 Citizen Men in 2:09.84. Kyle Quesnel of Squamish was 13 th in the same category in 2:14.33. Kevin Landry of Squamish was 30 th in 2:15.13.

The next B.C. Cup downhill event is the Sunshine Coaster in Roberts Creek this week, which is also the first cross-country race of the season.
