Following a week-long closure to protect migrating toads, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has reopened the Lost Lake beach, road and parking lot. The RMOW stated in a release Friday, Aug. 19, that environmental technicians estimate that tens of thousands of toads successfully migrated into the surrounding forest. The RMOW stated that a survey of the area determined that far fewer toadlets were killed this year by human activities, such as walking, biking, driving and park use, than in previous years.
The RMOW stated the Whistler Museum "Discover Nature" team provided successful on-site support and education, and the Chateau Whistler Golf Course re-routed trips to their practice facility — and also let the greens get a little longer in some areas to assist the migration. The RMOW also thanked the dozens of volunteers who helped out.
