Lot 1/9 design to go to public

It’s been a long time since the community had a look at the plans for Lot 1/9 in the village, and a lot has changed since then.

Gone are the 5,000 seat sledge hockey rink concepts; those ideas were scrapped when Whistler decided not to build the arena.

The rink designs have been replaced with a design concept in keeping with what the community had asked for when it first met to discuss the future of the last remaining undeveloped piece of land in the village: a gathering place for locals and guests, a connection to the outdoors, a place to celebrate arts and culture.

“It’s much more than just another plaza in the village,” said Mike Kirkegaard, resort experience manager of planning.

“We have put a lot of value in the words, the ideas, the descriptions that the community gave to us at that initial meeting. And it really has formed the basis for how we look at this site.”

That vision will be made public at an open house on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Whistler Conference Centre.

Kirkegaard was reticent to share too many details, but said the site will be a place that will remember the 2010 Games. The site will also play a major role during the Games as the main Live Site venue, the site of the medals ceremonies and the place where the Paralympic closing ceremonies will take place.

To accommodate those needs, Lot 1/9 will essentially be a flat undeveloped site until after the Games.

All community members are welcome to attend the open house. A presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Council is expected to approve a master plan in November, with site clearing to begin in the spring.
