Intrawest is now proposing to build two hotels, and a total of three buildings, on what has been the day skier parking lot below the Chateau Whistler Resort. The first hotel, on Lot E at the southern end of the parking lot, next to the Intrawest Resort and Club, is to be a 204-unit, landmark four- or five-star hotel. Situated at the eastern end of Lorimer Road, the initial design shows a four-storey structure next to Blackcomb Way which steps up to nine or 10 storeys against the east side of the lot. The 590 bed units required for this hotel are — with the 1,730 bed units planned for the Creekside, Spring Creek and The Peaks developments — the last of Whistler Mountain’s remaining bed units. Intrawest is negotiating with a couple of major hotel chains to operate the building. Work could begin on the Lot E building as soon as next summer. The Lot 5 hotel is actually two buildings and would likely be a separate hotel operation from the Lot E building. The southern building on Lot 5 is to be 130 units and seven storeys. The northern building is to be four storeys comprising 62 units. The two buildings will require 512 bed units. Thirty-six bed units will be transferred from the Emerald Forest; the remaining 476 bed units would be "new" bed units, over and above the municipality’s bed unit cap. Whistler’s total bed unit inventory, prior to the creation of the 476 new bed units, is estimated to be 54,623. That total includes developed and undeveloped bed units, as well as resident restricted (employee) housing. No employee housing is planned for either the Lot E or Lot 5 hotel. Intrawest will pay works and service charges for employee housing in lieu of providing housing. Intrawest is required to provide 1,500 day skier parking stalls for Blackcomb day skier use. With the development of Lots E and 5 Intrawest is proposing that its obligation be met by providing 925 stalls at Lots 6 and 7 (adjacent to Base 2), 300 stalls at Lot 8 (above Base 2), and 275 stalls in Lots 1-4 (across from municipal hall). Greater parking efficiency is expected with the paving of lots 1-4. Four existing public tennis courts will also be removed with the development of Lots E and 5. Intrawest will be required to replace three of the courts.
