A $1 million lottery win in Whistler turned out to be an elaborate hoax designed to embarrass a Whistler resident.

On Dec. 7 Pique received a call from someone claiming to be from the B.C. Lottery Corporation, informing the paper that a Whistler resident had won a lottery prize and was willing to speak to the media, as well as some details about the win. The reporter was given a phone number and proceded to interview the person for more than 15 minutes, enough to be satisfied that the win was genuine.

Pique did attempt to contact the B.C. Lottery Corporation to verify some of the details but did not receive a reply until two days later, after the story had been published.

Pique Newsmagazine and the writer wish to extend sincere apologies to the victim of the prank.
