Love and Lust auditions set

In matters of love and lust, we’ve all got one.

What: Famous Movie Monologues of Love and Lust

Where: MY (Millennium) Place

When: Sunday, Jan. 9 1-4 p.m. (auditions)

That’s a favourite movie scene, guttermind. Whether classic, campy, kitschy or cool, matters of the heart are always better on the silver screen.

Take high school for instance. I encountered some interesting dudes between the ages of 15 and 18 but none of them ever stood on my front lawn playing my favourite song on a ghetto blaster hoisted high over their head like John Cusack did in Say Anything . No one ever blew their college fund on a perfect pair of diamond earrings for me like Eric Stoltz did in Some Kind of Wonderful .

Sigh.

The creative forces of Whistler’s Short Skirt Theatre Co. and Between Shifts Theatre in Squamish want to tap into that delicious sentimentality we all harbour for our favourite film love scenes for the upcoming stage presentation Famous Movie Monologues of Love and Lust .

As the title suggests, the production will consist of a series of monologues – speeches delivered by single actors – sourced from well-known classic or blockbuster films, on the theme of love and lust.

Love is a many-interpreted thing and themes do not have to be specifically about romantic relationships. Adult content and coarse language will be accepted.

Folks who have a movie monologue in mind and want to step up to the stage have approximately three weeks to prepare for the auditions, which will be held in the theatre at MY Place on Jan. 9 between 1 and 4 p.m.

Those auditioning must present a polished performance of a monologue no longer than 3.5 minutes. Those who show up without a scheduled time will not be guaranteed an audition.

A grant from the Whistler Arts Council has allowed the show’s producers to hire a professional director who will provide those selected with three mandatory one-on-one coaching sessions prior to the performances. Monologues will present a two-show run in Whistler on Feb. 11 and in Squamish on Feb. 12.
