LRMP planned for the Sea to Sky corridor

Although the process hasn’t formally been launched, according to the Forever B.C. Web site a Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) for the Sea to Sky area is already underway.

"We’ve been getting ready for about a year now," says Peter Jones of the Land Use Co-ordination Office (LUCO). "We’re going to continue on with our work.

"We’re actually planning some open houses in March, and will probably be announcing those later in February."

Although the government and LUCO have said that they would not consider reopening the Protected Areas Strategy, which has already protected 13 per cent of the Lower Mainland region land base in parks, the LRMP process could allow for the creation of special management zones that could result in some kind of site-specific protection for key areas.

The LRMP process will also bring together logging, mining, recreational, tourism and environmental interests to try and come to a consensus over land use conflicts in the area.

At a symposium held last fall by the Council of Tourism Associations there was an overwhelming consensus that an LRMP was needed for the area.
