Mack graces the Plaza He's been seen with the rich and famous. His work has appeared on the sets of Hollywood movies and in the collections of such notable art aficionados as ex-presidents of the United States Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. The "he" is American Alto Relief sculptor Bill Mack, who will appear at the Plaza Galleries in the new Whistler Town Plaza Friday, April 19. Mack's work has been creating a bit of stir at the gallery of late, particularly due to its subject matter. His sculptures incorporate a three-dimensional experience, both textural and tactile, and those forms on display at Plaza Galleries typically involve his wife, Deborah. "My art has more physical depth than high relief," says Mack. "It incorporates various elements in the round, rising toward the viewer as in my 'illusion' image where her leg leaves the background extending into space." Early in his career as a commissioned artist Mack produced a series of works, including the Bicentennial medals for the state of Minnesota and cities of St. Louis and Baltimore, to reliefs and full-round sculptures for corporations such as General Motors, Pillsbury and 3M. In recent years he has produced a sculpture of basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA Hall of Fame and a memorial sculpture of Ryan White, who fought a losing battle against AIDS and prejudice in the ’80s. Mack, a resident of Minneapolis, will attend a special public showing at the Plaza from 6 to 9 p.m.
