Majority of parents satisfied with their children’s education.

More than three quarters of parents in the Howe Sound School District are satisfied all of the time or many times with what their children are learning in high school.

More than three quarters of parents in the Howe Sound School District are satisfied all of the time or many times with what their children are learning in high school.

That’s the general finding of the first annual satisfaction survey sent out to schools, parents and kids by the Ministry of Education.

The same survey found that 59 per cent of elementary school kids were also satisfied most of the time.

District superintendent Linda Rossler said the survey didn’t contain any surprises but that the results would be useful as schools, teachers, parents and students moved forward.

"One thing I think it does tell us that parents want more say in terms of school programs and we have been hearing that provincially," said Rossler.

According to the survey, 40 per cent of parents at Myrtle Philip felt they were only "sometimes" included in decisions made at school which affect the child. Another 60 per cent said they were only involved a few times.

At Whistler Secondary 50 per cent of parents felt they were involved in decision making.

Rossler is hopeful that the school planning councils will help address the lack of involvement of parents in schools.

"We have to all work together to achieve success in this," she said.

"Each school will take a look at their own results and say what does this mean for us.

"This is just data and data in itself is objective you have to bring meaning to it by understanding individual schools and teachers and students."

Provincially, 73 per cent of parents were satisfied all of the time or many times with what their children were learning.

Locally, 80 per cent of parents at Myrtle Philip were satisfied but only 63 per cent of parents at Whistler Secondary were pleased with what their kids were being taught.
