B.C. Masters Championship this weekend

Getting older and going downhill are not the same thing, unless of course you take the phrase literally and sign up to ski in the B.C. Masters Championship this weekend.

The event is sanctioned by B.C. Alpine and Alpine Canada Alpin, and hosted by the Whistler Mountain Ski Club. Competitions include a giant slalom on Blackcomb this Saturday and a slalom on Whistler Mountain on Sunday. In addition, there will be optional training on Friday, Feb. 14 on Blackcomb through the Gatebusters Program.

There are age classes for skiers as young as 19 and the organizers have included a 75 and over category for good measure. There will also be an open sports division for recreational racers.

The only condition for competing is that racers have to be a member of an ACA club or FIS affiliated organization, and have to be registered as masters by noon on Feb. 14. Memberships to the Whistler Mountain Ski Club are available for $40 while registering.

You can pick up your membership and pre-register at Whistler-Blackcomb Ski School Sales locations in the village and Blackcomb base, and can enter one or both events. The cost is $20 per race, and race day registration is available at the Rendezvous on Saturday and at the Dave Murray Video Centre at the top of the Garbanzo Chair on Sunday. Registration closes at 10 a.m. and races get underway at 10:30 a.m.

The number of entries is limited to 120 for each race, so pre-registration is recommended.

Each race will be followed by awards, video playback and draw prizes. The festivities on Saturday are at the Crab Shack, and at the Whistler Mountain Ski Club in Creekside on Sunday.
