POLICE SAY VILLAGE STROLL ASSAULT SEEMED TO BE CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY

The alleged assault of a man on the Village Stroll this week appears to be a case of mistaken identity, police said.

At around 2 a.m. on July 16, a man told Whistler RCMP he was assaulted while on the Village Stroll near the pedestrian bridge overlooking Village Gate Boulevard. Police noted the incident seemed to be the result of a mix-up on the suspect's part.

The male suspect, who fled on foot, is described as Caucasian, about six feet tall (183cm), with a thick build and wearing all black.

Anyone with details on this incident should contact the detachment or Sea to Sky Crime Stoppers.

WHISTLER RCMP CATCHES IMPAIRED DRIVER WITH STOLEN CAR

A report of an impaired driver led local police to a stolen car last week, according to Whistler RCMP.

Last Monday, July 10, Mounties received a call of a possibly impaired driver in the village. Officers tracked down the vehicle, parked on Main Street, and eventually spoke with the driver, who police said was impaired at the time and provided a false name.

RCMP soon learned the vehicle had just been stolen, and the 23-year-old Maple Ridge man was arrested for possession of stolen property. He appeared in court the following day.

DRIVER INJURED IN COLLISION WITH GARBAGE TRUCK

A driver was taken to hospital with injuries last week after colliding with a garbage truck.

On the morning of July 11, Whistler RCMP attended the scene of the two-vehicle crash on Highway 99. Investigation revealed the driver of the garbage truck had failed to yield when it turned onto the highway and struck the van, police said.

POLICE NAB SPEEDERS, IMPAIRED DRIVER

Local police stopped a handful of vehicles for driving infractions this past week.

Just before midnight on July 14, a driver who exhibited signs of impairment approached a checkstop on Lorimer Road. The driver failed a subsequent roadside screening demand and was issued an immediate 90-day driving prohibition.

Another driver was caught the same day going 145 kilometres an hour in a 100-kilometre zone.

The following night, a Pemberton RCMP member wrapping up a traffic stop on Pemberton Meadows Road was approached by another vehicle travelling 105 km/hr in a 50-kilometre zone. The woman was given a ticket for excessive speeding and her vehicle was impounded, police said.

Also on July 15, two different drivers were caught going 95km/hr in a 50-km zone.

Then, on the afternoon of July 16, a driver was caught speeding on Highway 99. When police requested a breath sample, the driver refused and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition.

"The Whistler and Pemberton RCMP are reminding the public to slow down to the posted speed limits, and to always adjust their driving to the current driving conditions," said Cpl. Darren Durnin in a release.
