After months of practice, the Whistler Hoary Marmots Rugby Club is ready to put their skills to the test at the annual 15-a-side Williams Lake Rustlers Stampede Tournament. Both the boys and girls will be playing in the tournament, which takes place alongside a rodeo and carnival.
The Hoary Marmots will be departing from their clubhouse (Tapley’s Pub) early Friday afternoon, and they are inviting supporters to come along to cheer on the team. Bring your boots. The team will be upholding a tradition that began at a Simon Fraser University tournament two summers ago by camping on the field, so they can be assured that they’re not going to miss their first game.
Following the tournament the club will be hosting the Vancouver Rowing Club RFC, one of the toughest teams in the Lower Mainland, on July 13. Other matches on the calendar include an SFU seven-a-side tournament in Vancouver, and the annual Whistler 7’s tournament.
The club will be hosting a fund-raiser after the Rowing Club match at Tapley’s.
"It would be great to get as many locals out to watch and cheer on the home side for this game, and then come and party with the players at the fund-raiser afterwards," said Marmots club captain John Gideon.
"The Rowers are a fantastic social side too, and those of you who were here last year can probably recall the fun and crazy times we had with them. It’s a day to book off now, maybe two."
The club has also received its new team shirts, and purchased some extra stock for locals that are interested in supporting the club. All proceeds will go to the Whistler Hoary Marmots RFC to cover competition costs.
