Martin leads Whistler K1 team to top spot 

Whistler's K1 team (ages 11 and 12) headed across the province to Red Mountain last weekend to take part in the Teck K1 Provincials. While the team has dominated in regional competition this year, the level of competition ramps up against the top clubs from the Interior and Kootenay region.

Mikayla Martin led the girl's team by wining all six giant slalom and slalom races from March 19 to 21, earning her a spot on Team Canada at the upcoming Whistler Cup international juvenile ski races.

Alex Gershon led the boys' team with two gold medals and a silver to qualify for the B.C. Ski Team at the Whistler Cup.

Other members of the team finished in the top 10.

On the first day Siobhan Finan was fifth in the morning slalom race, while Stefanie Fleckenstein was fourth in the afternoon.

The men raced GS on Friday, with Cameron Alexander placing fourth in the morning race and earning a bronze medal in the afternoon. Riley Seger earned a silver medal in the afternoon.

In the women's GS the next morning Siobhan Finan earned the silver medal behind Mikayla Martin, while Stephanie Fleckenstein occupied the second step on the podium in the afternoon.

Alex Gershon won the first slalom in the morning and finished second in the afternoon.

The final day of the competition was the Kombi race, a mixed discipline that includes elements of GS, slalom and speed events.

Stephanie Fleckenstein earned two bronze medals behind Martin.

While only those athletes placed on the podium, Sabrina Wong ended up with a ninth place ranking with consistent runs in all six races. Laura Swaffield was 11 th .

The Rio Tinto-Alcan Whistler Cup competition runs from April 9 to 11 with roughly 400 athletes aged 11 to 14 from across Canada and approximately 15 other countries taking part.
