Matchstick Productions’ latest makes Canadian premiere

Yearbook features Super-Booter in Whistler’s backcountry and athletes Mike Douglas and Mark Abma

What: Yearbook

Where: MY Place

When: Friday, Sept. 24, 7 and 9 p.m.

Matchstick Productions’ first Canadian stop on their Matchstick Movie Tour will bring them back to their stomping grounds: Whistler, home of the "Wu-Tang Super Booter Gap," a massive jump set in Whistler’s backcountry.

On Sept. 24, footage of the super-booter, and the athletes that dared to take it on, will be revealed at the showing of Yearbook at the Maurice Young Millennium Place Theatre at 7 and 9 p.m.

The concept, developed by Mike Douglas of Whistler-Blackcomb’s Pro Athlete Team and local cinematographer Guillaume Tessier, took over a week for Whistler-Blackcomb’s grooming staff to build and sculpt. According to Steve Winter of Matchstick Productions, the results are mind-blowing. The 70-foot long jump had a 15-foot deck and required a flight of over 40 feet above the gap for clearance – all with the stark silhouette of Black Tusk as a backdrop.

The crew filmed Whistler’s segment on May 6 from 4 p.m. to sundown. While four cameramen shot from the ground and Winter rolled tape from a helicopter, Douglas and Mark Abma as well as skiers Tanner Hall and C.R. Johnson launched themselves high into the sky.

That spring session will translate into one amazing night at MY Place, when skiers and riders alike will have the opportunity to experience winter through the visual artistry of the Matchstick Productions’ team.

Tickets can be purchased through the Millennium Place Box Office, through Ticketmaster. Doors open at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
