McIvor named to skicross team

After a summer of racing and training and a fall camp on the Farnham Glacier, Whistler’s Ashleigh McIvor has been named to the first Canadian skicross team.

After a summer of racing and training and a fall camp on the Farnham Glacier, Whistler’s Ashleigh McIvor has been named to the first Canadian skicross team.

McIvor, a former ski racer, has been concentrating on skicross for the last few years, competing in the X Games and various professional events.

However, with skicross becoming an Olympic event in 2010 Canadian officials have been working overtime to put together the first national skicross team to compete on a World Cup circuit this winter. Most of the World Cup events will take place in Europe this year, but the Canadian skicross team will be kicking off the season with a Jeep Tour event in Telluride, Colo. Dec. 13-16.

McIvor was second in a skicross race in New Zealand this summer, finishing just behind Noriko Fukashima, who was fifth at the most recent ski cross world championships. McIvor was faster than Fukashima out of the start in New Zealand, which can be a crucial factor in skicross.

The entire Japanese team and some Australian and New Zealand skiers were competing in the summer events.
