While one of the biggest awards an athlete can receive is a gold medal at an Olympic Games, last week Whistler's Ashleigh McIvor was nominated for a different type of award in recognition of her achievements - namely winning the world championships for ski cross in 2009, then going on to win the first Olympic gold medal for ski cross at Cypress Mountain in February.

Every year the sports network ESPN recognizes athletes who have achieved success through their ESPY Awards, which stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly.

McIvor was nominated in the Best Female Action Sport Athlete category. Other nominees were Australian snowboard gold medallist Torah Bright, freeskier Jen Hudak, motocross racer Ashley Fiolek, and surfer Stephanie Gilmore. Bright ended up winning the award. Fellow snowboard gold medallist Shaun White won the award for Best Male Action Sport Athlete.

A few other Canadians were nominated for ESPY Awards. UFC fighter Georges St. Pierre was nominated in the Best Fighter category; Sidney Crosby was nominated and won for Best NHL Player and for the Castrol Edge Performance Under Pressure Award for scoring the final goal in the gold medal game at the Olympics. That hockey game also earned Best Game honours.
