McIvor qualifies for X Games skier cross

A quick trip to Lake Tahoe last week netted Ashleigh McIvor a spot in the skier cross at the Winter X Games in Aspen at the end of the month.

McIvor, an alumnus of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, won the skier cross qualifier at Lake Tahoe, topping an international field.

Fellow Whistler skiers Davey Barr and Candace Drouin also made the trip to Tahoe but failed to qualify for the X Games.

Last winter McIvor competed in a number of local skier cross events, winning most of the time. She went to Sunshine, Alberta last spring for a skier cross competition and made the front page of the Calgary Herald sports section. Unfortunately it wasn’t for her results. McIvor had a spectacular crash at Sunshine, and a Herald photographer got a shot of her flying through the air upside down.

The Lake Tahoe skier cross was McIvor’s first this season. She won airfare to Aspen for the X Games, which take place Jan. 30 to Feb. 4, but she could use the help of a sponsor or two.

The X Games are reportedly the second largest winter sports event in the world, after the Olympics, and will be seen by 100 million TV viewers in 147 countries. They will be broadcast live on ABC and ESPN 2.

Any potential sponsors who might be interested in this kind of exposure, or just helping out a local skier, can call McIvor on her cell phone: 604-902-2745.
