Measles shots are spot on Whistler experienced its first case of measles last week, says Coast Garibaldi Health Unit public health nurse Marilyn McIvor, but none have appeared since. Across the province, there have been 214 cases of measles in this current outbreak, McIvor says. Measles can cause convulsions, deafness, or mental retardation. When the lone case of measles emerged, the health unit notified all people in physical contact with the carrier and offered them immunoprophylaxis and vaccine. The unit also notified local doctors and urgent care departments. All local one-year-olds are immunized against the sometimes deadly virus. Last spring a second measles shot was offered to children between 18 months and 18 years of age. People aged 19-40 can get a measles shot if they've never been vaccinated. Call the health unit — 932-3202 — for more information.
