Melamed wins Bear Mountain Challenge

Mountain bikers on a Mission

The top mountain bikers in the province headed to Mission last weekend to ride in the annual Bear Mountain Challenge cross country and downhill races.

The cross country race on Saturday was on the technical side, but no amount of rock or root seems to slow down the current crop of racers.

Whistler's Jesse Melamed filed away another win with his time of 1 hour, 37 minutes in the Junior Men 17 to 18 category. Quinn Moberg and Jereomy Pelletier of Squamish were second and third in 1:40:03 and 1:59:49 respectively. Alex Toews of Team Squamish was fifth in 2:19:16.

Local riders brave Arduum Challenge

The Arduum Challenge B.C. Cup downhill has always enjoyed a reputation of being a little harder than the rest. The trail winds down a mountainside outside of Mission, with some incredible steep, narrow and rooty sections where it's a challenge to remain on course, much less on your bike.

In the June 20 event, Jordan Gosteli of Sqaumish placed first in Under 17 Men in three minutes, 46.67 seconds. Also in the category, Jackson Lee of Squamish was fifth in 3:57.79, Kip Shortreed of Squamish eighth in 4:15.68, Alexander Geddes of Whistler ninth in 4:15.77 and Jonny Dempsey of Squamish 14 th in 4:48.95.
