Housing project re-evaluated The Millar's Pond affordable housing project has gone back to square one. "We've reviewed it and decided we're travelling in the wrong direction," said councillor Max Kirkpatrick. "We've gone back to the contractors and said we're not going to insist on 90 units on that site and we're not going to insist some of the units be available this year." The Whistler Valley Housing Society had tried a new approach to affordable housing: designing a project, hiring a co-ordinator and then presenting the project to developers to bid on. Last month the society held a workshop for contractors and asked them to bring the units on to the market for $100 per square foot and to have some of them ready for this winter. Kirkpatrick said the housing society decided at a meeting last week it will have to slow down. "We want a quality project," Kirkpatrick said. "We'll have a project co-ordinator hired and do the site preparation work this year." Kirkpatrick said some of the contractors may say they can build part of the project this year, but it will not be a condition of development. Interested developers may also get involved in the re-design of the project.
