Provided council approves the development permit at it’s April 3 council meeting, construction on the $5.6 million Maurice Young Millennium Place will start Monday, April 10. Stephen Milstein, who heads the building fund-raising committee, said the goal is still to have the facility up and running by Christmas 2000, although bookings won’t be taken until January 2001. He said if Amako could build the Roundhouse Lodge — at over 6,000 feet atop Whistler Mountain — in six months, he believes the construction company can build Millennium Place, on the valley bottom, in nine. To date almost $4 million has been raised for the facility, with almost $500,000 in recent contributions coming from a Provincial grant and the Houssian family. "We hope to raise the balance in 90 days," said Milstein. "We don’t want a mortgage. That will raise the costs." Although ground will be broken the week of April 10, an official sod turning ceremony won’t take place until perhaps Easter Sunday, when the Young family can be present. Milstein said an ecumenical service may be held at the site Easter Sunday. The hoarding at the construction site will not be painted until May 27 and 28, the date of the Whistler Children’s Art festival. It will remain a blank canvas for the kids to decorate. The younger ones will have paint-by-number pictures designed for them by the older students.
