Whistler council has designated two projects, representing mind and spirit, as Whistler’s Millennium Projects.

Whistler council has designated two projects, representing mind and spirit, as Whistler’s Millennium Projects. The Whistler Interfaith Chapel and Meeting Place is the community Millennium Project and the new library and museum will be the municipal Millennium Project. The Whistler Skiers Chapel Society appeared before council May 19 to ask that the chapel and community building be designated Whistler’s Millennium Project. Council reserved its decision until Monday, when it announced the community Millennium Project and the municipal Millennium Project. The Skiers Chapel Society has put together a detailed fund-raising plan for the chapel and community facility, which will be built on the lot between Village North Park and municipal hall. The society intends to raise 80 per cent of its $3.5 million target through corporate and/or major private donors in the next six months, before going to the public in December to raise the final 20 per cent. The target date for the start of construction is June, 1999, with completion expected 12 months later. The Interfaith Chapel and Meeting Place will include a teen centre, a child care centre, a community organization work room, a performance venue and religious services for several denominations. The permanent library and museum is expected to be incorporated into the municipal facility that will eventually be built on Lots 1 and 9 in Village North. Fund-raising for the library and museum is scheduled to begin in the year 2000, after the chapel society’s campaign has ended. The library and museum will open two or three years later. The library and museum will be tied to an arena or cultural facility on Lot 1. Exactly what will be built, how it will be financed and timing of the project is being reviewed by the municipality. The municipality has set aside some funds in its long-term capital plan for development of Lot 1. The Whistler Public Library will become a municipal library in 1999.
