ICBC says new statistics show a winter crackdown on speeders on the Sea to Sky Highway was "an enormous success." The Sea to Sky Enhanced Enforcement Project saw RCMP step up their presence on the highway during November and December. "Using a high-tech laser which is able to measure vehicle speed over one kilometre in distance, RCMP reduced the number of accidents by 29 percent during November and December compared to the same two month period the previous year," according to an ICBC release. There were 102 collisions from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 1995, compared to 144 collisions during the same period in 1994. RCMP across the province have launched a speed enforcement campaign this week, to April 7. The campaign includes the use of 50 laser guns on major provincial highways. As well, photo radar cameras are being used in high risk areas on the Sea to Sky Highway as part of a year-long initiative to reduce accidents.
