Morning snow brought back-to-back highway accidents

Icy road conditions the morning of Thursday, March 20 led to two separate car crashes within 15 minutes on the Sea to Sky Highway.

At 7:57 a.m. there was a three-car pile up near Brandywine Creek Bridge, said RCMP Corporal Dave Ritchie of Sea to Sky Regional Police Services.

The accident happened after a southbound car slid across the icy road while going around a right-hand bend.

“The vehicle skidded across the centre line, collided head-on with a north-bound vehicle, and then another north-bound vehicle struck the north-bound vehicle that was hit,” said Ritchie.

The driver of the southbound car, a 57-year-old woman, has been issued a violation ticket for failing to keep to the right hand lane.

Ritchie said those involved suffered minor chest and neck injuries.

The accident also caused a traffic backup along Highway 99 that morning.

Earlier, at 7:43 a.m., a vehicle spun out of control further south on the highway, near Brew Creek Lodge.

The northbound car spun 180 degrees across the centre line before colliding with large boulders and flipping onto its side, said Ritchie.

The driver, who was the only occupant, was thrown out of the vehicle in the collision but did not suffer any major injuries.

“Road conditions at the time were good visibility and snow, with the road surface very slippery with slush and ice,” said Ritchie.

He added that drivers have to continue to exercise caution while driving the highway in snowy conditions — including maintaining a safe speed and being outfitted with proper winter tires.

“Just like yesterday morning (Sunday, March 30), when we get a fresh two inches of snow in Squamish, you still have to drive prudent to the conditions,” he said.
