After asking staff to review Whistler Cable Television’s sporadic coverage of council meetings and its non-coverage of November’s all-candidates meeting, Mayor Hugh O’Reilly announced Monday there is “a new spirit of co-operation” between the municipality and Whistler Cable.

O’Reilly indicated this week a meeting with the cable operator had cleared up some issues and the municipality may consider ways to assist Whistler Cable in its broadcast of council meetings.

A motion passed unanimously at the Dec. 13 council meeting asked municipal staff to review the minimum requirements for cable TV programming as set by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunication Commission. The request came after council received copies of letters from other municipalities to the CRTC and to Rogers Cablesystem Limited regarding that cable company’s refusal to televise all-candidates meetings.

The Whistler Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the local all-candidates meeting, has written to the CRTC regarding Whistler Cable’s failure to cover the meeting.

All 26 units at the Ridge at Taluswood will be zoned for nightly rentals after the owner of one unit reconsidered and decided to become a member of Tourism Whistler.

On Dec. 20 council adopted a bylaw to have the entire Ridge complex zoned for nightly rentals, along with five other Intrawest properties, including Taluswood Phase 1, Forest Creek, Blackcomb Greens, Treeline and the Woods. Later in the same meeting, council gave first two readings to rezone Unit 23 in the Ridge from tourist use back to residential use, because  the owner would not apply to become a member of Tourism Whistler.

The owner has since reconsidered and on Monday the first two readings to rezone Unit 23 to residential use were rescinded.
