After years of intense negotiations, the municipality finally took possession of MY Millennium Place from the Whistler Interfaith Society Tuesday.
All the official transfer documents for the multi-use building were filed with Land Title, under the provincial government, said Lisa Landry from the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
Added Mayor Ken Melamed: "It has been a long process."
"We have taken the necessary steps to complete council's direction on behalf of the community to take ownership of the building."
The plan to transfer the building from the interfaith society to the RMOW has been in the works since 2007, since the RMOW had taken over the debt payments for the building.
The interfaith society built MY Place in 2001, but was not able to raise enough money to cover construction costs.
Jason Kawaguchi, president of the interfaith society, however re-stated this week that the ownership transfer was not the society's preferred route.
"We would have liked to have maintained the building and paid off the mortgage," said Kawaguchi.
"In the end it was the current financial climate that probably forced it to end the way it did."
Through the deal, the interfaith society will still be able to use MY Millennium Place for religious ceremonies, and the Millennium Place Society will continue to operate it.
