Sleuths in search of truth What: Murder Mystery Where: Whispering Falls Resort, Birken When: Aug. 22 In search of a mystery? It's time to dust off your magnifying glass and head up the corridor to Birken. A murder mystery is taking place on Saturday, Aug. 22. The killing will take place at the Whispering Falls Resort. The police will release details at 1 p.m., so you'll need to have your sleuthing team in place by 12:30 p.m. Who will be offed is a mystery as yet, but it could be Buck Yew the logger, Art Willow the furniture builder, Con Tort the lawyer or his wife Trudy Schweinhert, a couple who are tourists in the area. But maybe it'll be Helen Wheels or Harley Hog from Vancouver, if it isn't Tiffany Tush or Geo Teck. "One of them dies and somebody else killed them," says organizer Patty Kirkpatrick illuminatingly. The murder mystery will feature a barbecue, prize draws and a beer garden, as well as a grand prize for the successful detective who cracks the case. At this point that prize is rumoured to be a bag of the legendary Birken Gold. The event is a fund-raiser for the Birken Volunteer Firefighters. "We just formed a Fire Protection Society," explains Kirkpatrick. "We have a fire truck and we've just had another one donated from BC Hydro, but we need a place to put them. They need a home." Two summers ago there were two fires in Birken that destroyed properties. "One was the lodge in Birken and the other was a residential home. Both of them burned to the ground before the fires could be put out. We've been a bit of a bucket brigade up until now," says Kirkpatrick. The volunteer firefighters will be on hand during the day to run the beer garden as well as helping with other incidents. Kirkpatrick says the whole community is getting involved in the action. The murder mystery day kicks off with a police briefing by local constables. From there the game expands around the community. "People will have to go about the whole neighbourhood. There will be local people around that heard something strange or saw something. You will have to interview witnesses around the lake and get a search warrant for the contents of the cabins. I hope we haven't made it too hard. I think someone will be able to solve it." The murder mystery idea developed out of a local book club. Susie Gimes and Val Bunt "wrote a mystery for the hell of it." A group in Sechelt used the story as a fund-raiser and now the book club is bringing it back to Birken. Kirkpatrick says they are hoping to draw in around 30 teams (with a maximum of four people in each). Everyone, from tourists passing through to local Whistler and Pemberton people, are welcome to get involved. People can camp over at the Whispering Falls or Birkenhead resorts, or the provincial and forestry campgrounds. For more information contact either Pat at (604) 452-3271, or Heather at (604) 894-5546.
