Museum open for business during construction

Construction began on the new library facility this week, but that hasn’t prevented the Whistler Museum and Archives from extending their operating hours for the summer.

"We are now open seven days a week instead of just four," said Jimi Galvao, Program and Design Co-ordinator for the museum. "Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for Thursday, when we are open until 8 p.m."

The regular galleries featuring exhibits on the natural and human history of Whistler will all be open. There is also a kid’s corner in the works as well as several additions to the galleries expected later in August. In September, the museum is planning to create a community exhibit space where exhibits designed and created by Whistler residents can be displayed.

Several family-orientated events are planned for the summer. On July 24, the museum will present Michael Allen’s Bear Paws program at Spruce Grove Field House. And Aug. 21 will see the return of the Lego Building Competition.

Regular programs on demand, such as valley tours and historical new-media presentations are also available as usual.

"The museum hopes to be going through its own renovation process soon enough," said Kerry Clark, museum curator. "In the meantime, we remain open and safely accessible to the public. Visitors can enter through our usual main entrance, just past the main entrance to the library."
