Muslim-Christian dialogue series begins Sunday

In an effort to create greater understanding of one of the world’s largest religions, the Whistler Village Church is hosting an interfaith dialogue series for four Sundays in May.

The dialogue series is entitled "Christianity and Islam Today" and is intended to provide the groundwork for new relationships and new understanding, especially in these times of global conflicts.

"The whole idea is to foster dialogue, rather than conversion," said Reverend William Roberts. "We want to create more understanding."

Each Sunday morning service throughout May begins at Millennium Place at 10 a.m.. There will be a dialogue sermon with the Reverend Roberts and a Muslim guest as part of each service. After the service the dialogue with the guest will continue over coffee.

On Sunday, May 4 join Aziz Khaki of the Pacific Interfaith Association on "Our Common History: From Abraham to Qatar."

On Sunday, May 11 join Selma Mawani of UBC’s Spirit of Islam Exhibit for a "Mother’s Day Celebration of Women in Christianity."

On Sunday, May 18, Maged Senbel will discuss his PhD thesis on "Reverence for the Earth: Christian-Muslim Beliefs on Creation."

Finally on Sunday, May 25 there will be a walking partnership with Shaheen Tejani in support of the Aga Khan Foundation. On May 25 Ismailis across Canada will be holding similar walks to raise funds for international aid and development projects operated by CIDA in co-operation with the Aga Khan Foundation.

Roberts says the dialogue series is an extension of the community’s efforts to build better understanding, through the Olympics and through welcoming visitors from around the world.

All are welcome to attend the dialogue series. An interfaith film series is also being considered for the fall.
