Nebbeling wants more from Hydro

Liberal MLA Ted Nebbeling is backing demands by lobbyists in Gold Bridge that B.C Hydro take immediate steps to install a complete barrier system around its Carpenter Reservoir to prevent more vehicles entering it.

Liberal MLA Ted Nebbeling is backing demands by lobbyists in Gold Bridge that B.C Hydro take immediate steps to install a complete barrier system around its Carpenter Reservoir to prevent more vehicles entering it.

Eleven people have drowned there since 1980, the result of the vehicles they were travelling in veering off Road 40 and into the reservoir. B.C Hydro announced last December it would be contributing $2.35 million toward raising overall traffic safety standards in the area. Approximately half of that money was to be channelled into upgrading Mission Mountain Road and Road 40 between Terzarghi Dam and Gold Bridge.

However, Nebbeling claims that is not enough.

"The releasing of funds to build only 1/8 of the barriers required is not sufficient and this situation requires immediate action," Nebbeling has said.

The MLA has requested a meeting with Hydro to discuss the issue.

Reservoir Safety Committee chair, Dave Watkins says he is pleased that both major political parties have got on board the issue, through Nebbeling and the Lillooet MLA Harry Lali of the NDP.

Lali was Highways Minister until last week when he resigned, claiming too many decisions are being made from Premier Ujjal Dosanjh’s office.
