Nerds versus Mardi Gras? Only in Whistler

Only in Whistler would Nerds versus Mardi Gras even be considered a choice.

But so it goes for those looking for a party on Saturday night.

Over at Merlin’s the notoriously naughty crew from Nasty Nymphs Productions are throwing their fourth annual Mardi Gras party. DJ Loki will be on the decks throwing down house music, while Whistler’s wildest girls go crazy trying to earn their beads. Doors are at 9:30 p.m. and it’ll cost ya $5 to get in.

Down the hill at the GLC Saturday night DJ Mr. Fister is celebrating his birthday at the other end of the spectrum with a nerd party.

Let’s face it, pretty much everyone in Whistler is cool, attractive and fit, making a room full of nerds ironically hilarious. Don’t be too insecure to look stupid. Don’t go sexy-schoolgirl. That’s just not the point. For one night you are free to be the biggest, nerdiest dork alive. Go for it. Don’t let your musical education instructor and party host Mr. Fister down.

The night’s sound will be eclectic-electro and breaks from Mr. Fister and special guest DJ Zeddicus from Salt Lake City. Doors are at 9 p.m. and it’ll cost ya $5 to get in. Adding to the bizarro-vibe of the night nerds get VIP treatment over the cool, pretty people in line. Take that, jock-o!

Essential Filmography

Nerds

Revenge of the Nerds (1984) Standing the test of time as the ultimate nerd movie – a plucky fraternity of dorks, nerds and generally unpopular college kids take on their sadistic jock oppressors and win. Yes! Lambda Lambda Lambda forever! Honourable mentions: Napoleon Dynamite (2004), Rushmore (1998), Weird Science (1985).

Mardi Gras

Easy Rider (1969) It’s been said that director Dennis Hopper had pretty much lost it by the time the iconic counterculture road movie reached New Orleans and that the Mardi Gras party footage and the subsequent graveyard acid scene were improvised, which gives them an almost documentary-like quality. It’s sadder the second time to watch Captain America and Billy walk wide-eyed through the streets of Mardi Gras knowing it’s their last night on earth. Honourable mentions: Point of No Return (1993), Dracula 2000 (2001), Girls Gone Wild: Mardi Gras 2K3 (2003).
