New dates for Children’s Art Festival

Longtime event held later in the summer

The Whistler Children’s Art Festival has been postponed two weeks and will now be held July 23-24 in order to correspond with Tourism Whistler’s 2 nd Annual Music and Arts Festival.

At 23-year-old the Whistler Arts Council-run Children’s Art Festival is the longest running festival in Whistler and has traditionally taken place at the end of May. The event was moved to July for the first time this year to combat declining attendance due to increasing levels of kids activities near the end of the school year.

The move was also motivated by advantages in marketing the festival with Tourism Whistler’s Music and Arts Festival, originally scheduled for the weekend of July 9-11.

Tourism Whistler has since rescheduled the Music and Arts Festival for the weekend of July 22-24 so not to compete with the Sea Vancouver Festival, scheduled for July 9-11, Festival and Events coordinator Paula Mohammed explained.

This year’s Children’s Art Festival is also moving to a new venue in Creekside’s Franz’ Trail area with workshops conducted in a series of tents and a greater emphasis on performing artists.

Over the years the festival has offered workshops in a variety of visual media and performance art disciplines including photography, kite-making, painting, carving, percussion, mask-making, scratch art, magic, jewelry-making, T-shirt painting and drawing, taught by prolific artists from throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor.

Artists are still being sought to instruct workshops at the 2005 event. For more information email info@whistlerartscouncil.com.
