New events planned for WSSF

Riders, skiers compete on same Telus World weekend

New events planned for TWSSF

The 10 th annual Telus World Ski And Snowboard Festival will return April 14-23 this year with a lot of new events for athletes and spectators.

The most noticeable change is that there will no longer be one weekend for skiers and one weekend for snowboarders. Instead, riders and skiers will compete together on the same days in the same events, although they will be judged separately.

The Salomon Superpipe runs from April 17 to 22, including two days of training, a separate ski qualifier on April 19, a snowboard qualifier on April 20, and a combined semi-final and final on April 21 and 22.

Another new (ish) event is the Playstation Big Air, which also combines skiers and snowboarders. The training day is April 21 and the Playstation Big Air Show takes place on April 22 under the lights in Skiers Plaza.

Also new this year is the inaugural Stompede, a kind of closed slopestyle and rail jam under the Emerald Chair on Whistler Mountain, where skiers and boarders will be judged on how well they use the various features.

The McDonald’s Rail Session will be back for a third year, with invited skiers and athletes squaring off on a pipe built on the side of the GLC patio for $10,000 in cash and prizes.

The lists of invited pros and invited qualifiers for these events are already posted online at www.whistler2006.com

Minor Hockey comes to a close with another banner

The season wrapped up this past weekend for the Whistler Minor Hockey Association, with yet another team winning a banner for Meadow Park. The Bantam ‘A’ team placed second in the province at the recent provincial championships in Lillooet, while the Atom C2 team went undefeated to win the Lions Gate League banner for the regular season and playoffs.

The WMHA would like to thank its volunteer coaches, team manager, trainers and scorekeepers, as well as the team’s sponsors for their donations to local minor hockey.

The WMHA will host its Annual General Meeting on April 19 at Boston Pizza, and is looking for new ideas and new blood for next season.
