new hotel

Another hotel closer to construction A hotel project of 84 units slated for Lot 19 kitty-corner to Marketplace and the Tyndalstone Lodge progressed to approval of its village permit application by municipal council, Monday. The building will be four storeys and will back onto a planned municipal water park. It’s architectural look will be similar to the Alpenglow development well underway next door to it. More than 12,000 square feet of commercial space will occupy the main floor, with 67 parking spaces underground. The new development will also include public washrooms, to be located next to the hotel lobby. Council seemed happy with most aspects of the proposed hotel, but councillor Ken Melamed wanted to be sure the bicycle parking area included in the plans wouldn’t be usurped by the developer for more parking spaces. The plan talks of "parking of bicycles or vehicles." Municipal staff said the wording allowed the developer to use it as parking, if he so wished. "Then the covenant (insisting on bicycle spaces) doesn’t have much validity," Melamed said, asking that the "or vehicles" be deleted. Staff said the wording was designed to prevent the developer turning the space into a storage area. That the height of the hotel was more than the 13m maximum also concerned councillor Melamed, but staff said the average of the various roof heights brought the project under the maximum. There are two bell tower-like structures in the project.
