New investors and a new sales manager to take SMS Clothing to another level

After 13 years of ski camps and seven years of making freeride clothing, Whistler’s SMS Clothing is taking some serious steps towards expanding its operation.

Owner John Smart confirmed SMS, which started as Smart Mogul Skiing in 1992, had recently won the support of two private investors and appointed Peter Godber as North American sales manager.

Godber spent many years in the sports business in the ’80s and ’90s with Bic Sport and as GM of Freestyle Watches Canada.

His main role will be to expose the eastern American markets to the SMS brand.

SMS was launched into the mainstream retail market three years ago and has already expanded into North America and the company is now taking steps to move into the European market.

Godber, who will be based in Montreal, said: "New investors, new ideas, increased distribution, and East and West Coast offices will help us meet the demands of our growing network of retailers."

SMS gained recognition as a clothing company in the mid-90s when it started marketing youth freeride ski clothing through their summer ski camps, which were recently re-named Momentum Camps.

Smart said SMS’s 2005 line of clothing will include 15 new technical styles for men and women.
