New mountain film fest launched

"Only natural to create a mountain film festival in a place known as the outdoor recreation capital of Canada."

The Squamish Film Society launches its inaugural Squamish Mountain Film Festival Friday, Aug. 4 and Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Eagle Eye Theatre in Squamish.

"It seems only natural to create a mountain film festival in a place known as the outdoor recreation capital of Canada," said festival director Ivan Hughes in a press release. "I think that SQUMFF can easily become a destination event, something where people could come for films and then stay for the adventure Squamish has to offer."

Legendary climber Peter Croft will kick off the festival Friday with a slide show entitled A Life of Adventure . The evening presentation also includes a tribute to the 40 th anniversary of the first ascent of University Wall, films from around the globe and the Squamish premier of Kayaks on the Roof of the World.

Squamish climber Sonnie Trotter opens the Saturday-night event with a multimedia presentation entitled An Average Joe. The film captures the climber freeing the Cobra Crack route. At 5.14 b/c, it is deemed one of the hardest traditional routes in the world.

Other films for the night include the world premiere of Back to the Wall, which follows the story of quadriplegic climber Brad Zdanivsky’s 10-year journey to climb the Squamish Chief. Selections from the best of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival will also be screened.

Each film night begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. sponsored by the Whistler Brewing Company, where festival goers can meet with fellow outdoor enthusiasts, businesses and guide companies. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m.

Advance tickets are $15 and available at The Squamish Adventure Centre, Valhalla Pure Outfitters and Climb On in Squamish. Tickets are $17 at the door.
