New music festival announced for Whistler

Mountain West Music Fest scheduled for Aug. 21-23

Pemberton Festival may be taking a year off, but local music lovers will have another chance to get their fix of live music in their own backyard this summer.

A three-day music festival, dubbed Mountain West Music Fest, is set to take place Aug. 21 to 23 on the Whistler Golf Club driving range, though the lineup hasn't been announced yet.

The event is being organized by Watermark Communications, a Whistler business that produces events like First Night, Cornucopia and the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

Sue Eckersley, president of Watermark, explained that they hope to draw between 2,000 and 5,000 people per day to the event. Though Eckersley wouldn't announce details of the lineup just yet - they're still in negotiations with many of the groups - she emphasized that Watermark had been careful to pick real "festival bands" that will appeal to a wide range of music lovers, and that already have loyal followings of fans expected to snap up tickets to the event.

"We hope that in the future its going to build where it becomes a real traffic-driver within the resort, but I think that what we want to do is start out not small - we're putting substantially more resources behind it for example, than Campground C," she said.

More details are expected in the next few weeks.
