New restaurant mountains apart

New restaurant moves into vacated Zeuskis

The operators of West Vancouver’s The Ocean Club are literally taking fine dining to new heights, 2,200 feet/670 metres to be exact, with the opening of a new Whistler restaurant this winter called The Mountain Club.

Getting the Vancouver-based company into Whistler was a bit of a rugged climb. In August, Whistler council unanimously rejected the company’s application to transfer an existing liquor license from Larco Investments to the plaza level of Whistler Village Centre.

However, when Zeuski’s closed its doors last month, The Mountain Club discovered a new and welcome home with better positioning on the Village Stroll.

Andre Thomas, Ocean and Mountain Club managing partner, is at the helm of this adventure, along with Derek Pink and Dave Kershaw , a duo most famously known for hot nightspots such as AuBar, Tonic and Stone Temple in Vancouver as well as Garfinkel’s and Savage Beagle in Whistler. Thomas is also a well-known face around Whistler. Thomas managed both Araxi and the Fifty Two 80 Bistro at the Four Seasons in Whistler.

Thomas aims to create a fun, hip ambience with a great wine list, handcrafted cocktails and casual fine dining — all at a reasonable price.

The Mountain Club will be modeled on its sister restaurant with an alpine twist. Sandy-coloured couches and seashore photography adorn The Ocean Club. The Mountain Club will focus on warmer forest colours with natural-material décor.

The Mountain Club menu will be categorized into earth, air and water choices, ranging from Mac and Cheese to the decadent burger. Executive chef Doug Scott will oversee the opening of the kitchen.
