While last year’s Performance Series experienced a financial loss, the Whistler Arts Council moves forward with the 2006-07 season as the lone presenter with a full house of optimism.

Since 2003, the series has been co-presented with MY Millennium Place.

“This performance year took a loss,” said Dennis Marriott, MY Place general manager. “The two groups shared (that loss). The MY Place board asked to limit the loss as part of the partnership. We put forward a proposal to limit liability. (The Whistler Arts Council) chose not to accept that.”

Marriott said the partnership was always a temporary one and that MY Place will continue to show full support for the program. The two organizations are still in active discussion with one another.

While last season suffered a financial loss, Marriott said attendance was drastically up with many sell-out shows. He attributed the financial loss to lack of sponsorship. However, after last year’s successful attendance numbers, sponsorships for the 2006-07 Performance Series season are on the rise.

The Whistler Arts Council has announced the first two shows of the 2006-07 Performance Series.

Rhythm & Stomp shares the powerful history of percussion in Africa Oct. 21 at MY Place. The animated show follows percussion history with stops along the way in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. From traditional African and Brazilian rhythms to the hip hop of today, instruments will transcend time and culture at the B.C. Hydro sponsored event.

International Guitar Night will showcase the diversity of guitar cultural styles and techniques Nov. 1 at MY Place. The forum welcomes the world’s most original guitar players/composers to awaken audiences to the limitless possibilities of guitar. Guitar Night is sponsored by Ryan Guitars, LR Baggs, Morris Guitars USA/Moridaira Music Japan and Varig Airlines.
