Whistler RCMP was generally pleased with New Year's Eve crowds this year, with a similar number of tickets and offences to last year, which was also considered good by historic standards.

Over the course of the evening the police, bolstered by members from the Lower Mainland, handed out 47 bylaw tickets for possession of open liquor, five tickets for urinating in public, one ticket for causing a nuisance, one for swearing, one for a minor consuming alcohol and one for a minor in possession of alcohol. Eleven were arrested for being drunk in public, including various individuals that were starting fights.

Just after 9 p.m. on Dec. 31, officers with an RCMP road check on Lorimer Road stopped a vehicle and detected the smell of marijuana. After arresting the two occupants for possession the police seized 76 grams of marijuana and $6,000 in cash. Two males — a 31-year-old from Edgewood and a 29-year-old from Ontario — were released with a promise to appear in court on Mar. 27.

Just before 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, the police entered a pub in Whistler Village where they encountered a tour guide looking for a few of the high school students in his care. There were 130 kids visiting from Brazil and the guide was in charge of 24 individuals he believed to be in the pub.

The police attended and saw a large number of young people. Some left, but they stopped six underage patrons including two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old. The police issued the bar a licensed premise check for follow-up with the local liquor licence inspector, while the Brazilian students were released without charges as they were leaving the country.

Just before 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, the RCMP attended a loud party on the 2200 block of Brandywine Way that was being attended by Whistler Fire Rescue Services and B.C. Ambulance Services.

There was a dispute at the door of the party and a female was pushed down the stairs and through the window at the bottom. When the police arrived she was being taken to the clinic with lacerations. The police are continuing to investigate.

"I can say that we were very pleased with the way things went on New Year's Eve," said Staff Sergeant Steve LeClair of the Whistler RCMP.

"This is my sixth New Year's Eve here and I found it quite similar to the last in that the crowds were very well behaved and for the most part behaviour was quite lawful."
