Deadline looming for Village Square ideas

Want to spice up the Village Square? Then write down your ideas, sketch them or take a photo and pack it off to municipal hall. You may just be chosen to create a new tourist kiosk to be built over the summer.

You must get in quick though – the deadline for submissions is Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.

The Village Square encompasses some of Whistler’s busiest centres like the Grocery Store, B.C. Liquor Store, Pharamasave, Araxi’s and Citta’s. it’s considered Whistler’s principal plaza, and serves as the central meeting place for key events.

In summer 2003, the municipality will implement a plan to enhance the square through upgrades to walls, planters, patios, landscape and seating. The kiosk will be a focal feature of the square, and will replace an existing map and message board. There is no theme or pre determined design direction for the kiosk, however the project should fit the character of Whistler Village and should reflect a sense of place.

The budget for this project is $65,000 and the winning designer will be chosen by a jury of industry professionals. So get inspired, grab a friend if you like and get to work. Vagina Monologue tickets on sale

As of midday on Valentine’s Day, tickets can be snapped up for the one-night-only local production of the Vagina Monologues, hitting the MY Place stage Feb. 28.

It might pay to have your fingers on the dial at 11:59 a.m. if last year’s sales are anything to go by. Tickets were sold out in 36 hours.

As part of the annual V Day movement – that’s the world-wide campaign to stop violence against women – volunteers from the community get to stage their own production of the famous Broadway hit written by Eve Ensler. Hailed by the critics as "funny, poignant, intelligent and courageous," the Vagina Monologues delves deep into the world of women.

All proceeds from the $40 ticket price will go to raising awareness and funding for local anti-violence groups. The MY Place performance will particularly benefit Pearl’s Transition House in Squamish and a First Nations charity.

Starring in this year’s production are Michele Bush and Cheryl Massey from Ab Fab’s Fat; local actress Angie Nolan from the series The Beachcombers and Stephanie Brown, among others. Look out for a feature story in next week’s Pique. Go to Ticketmaster or call My Place for bookings on 604-935-8418.

Ross on Resort TV

If anyone knows what’s fun to do around town it’s Whistler’s golden boy of the Olympics, Ross Rebagliati. The medal winning local is not just a snowboarder, he hikes, golfs, mountain bikes, surfs, stock-car races and does motocross.

On the career front, he’s an entrepreneur, sports personality and private snowboard instructor. As if he wasn’t busy enough, he can now add TV show host to his extensive credentials. He’s got himself a five minute segment every hour on the hour with Resort TV, showing us what to do on our day’s off. Through video interviews, Ross will highlight the attractions, the equipment, the personnel and terrain in and around Whistler.

Fun part of new youth church service

Do you find it hard to stay awake in church? Family Victory knows how you feel. That’s why they’ve started up a service specially designed for teens and young adults.

If you’re part of that 18-35 age group looking for something more energetic out of prayer, come on down. Sunday nights MY Place will become the Victory Christian Centre starting Feb. 16. From 6 p.m., Pastor John Burns will lead attendees through a musical and fun journey with Jesus. Burns heads the popular church from Vancouver but is excited to be bringing his unique take on teaching the ways of the bible to Whistler. "It’ll be an intense, fun time for all of us, hanging out with friends and getting to know God."
